Lest I Fall: Exposing Self-Rigtheousness

1 Corinthians 10:12-13

12 Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall. 13 No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to [a]bear it.

Self-righteousness often manifests when individuals become overly confident in their own moral standing, believing themselves immune to failure or sin. This attitude can lead to pride, judgment of others, and a lack of humility. In 1 Corinthians 10:12, Paul warns against this mindset, emphasizing that those who think they stand firm should be cautious, recognizing their vulnerability to falling. 3. Seeking Recognition: Performing good deeds for the approval and praise of others rather than genuine service.
4. Resistance to Correction: Rejecting feedback or accountability, believing oneself to be above reproach.
5. Comparative Righteousness: Measuring one’s morality against others to feel superior rather than striving to align with God’s standards.
6. Hypocrisy: Pretending to uphold moral values publicly while engaging in sinful behavior privately.
7. Legalism: Rigidly adhering to rules and traditions without understanding the spirit behind them, often neglecting grace and compassion.
8. Lack of Gratitude: Failing to recognize God’s grace and believing one’s own efforts are the primary source of righteousness.

These attitudes can create spiritual blindness, making individuals unaware of their vulnerability to sin and in need of God’s grace and guidance. Lord, help us to be humble and reminded that you hold us together and keep us in your grace.
